scent of autumn

There's nothing more comforting when the cold weather hits than sweet smells of cinnamon and cloves, hot cocoa and apple pie. I love this idea of making a "pumpkin spice simmering stove top potpourri" (thanks to Bridgette over at Free People), the whole house will smell of fall.

You'll Need:
  • 1/2 gallon apple cider
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tbsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp whole cloves
  • Fill a saucepan with 3/4 apple cider. Mix in pumpkin, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, vanilla extract and whole cloves. Bring mixture to a boil and then reduce to low heat. When the mixture gets low, add more apple cider. (Be sure not to let mixture scorch!)
Bridgette also recommends doing this with orange, lemon, bay leaves, anise, rosemary and dried lavender. Yum.

A few winters ago I posted recipes of Mexican hot chocolatered velvet hot cocoa, and a hot apple toddy. Check them out!
